Dr. Funck grew up in Luebeck,
Germany. After receiving his M.D. from the University
of Hamburg in 1968 he completed his trauma surgery
and orthopedic surgeon training in Hannover and Braunschweig,
Germany. After finishing his clinical education he
left the operating branch and switched to muscoloskeletal
medicine, as well as manual therapy, opening his
own private office in Luebeck in 1975.
In Bremen, Germany, Dr. Funck took up studies in orthopedic medicine, focusing
on Cyriax diagnosis and treatment of soft tissues. He studied manual therapy
with Prof. Tilscher from Vienna who first introduced him to Prolotherapy for
low back pain patients. The same advice was given by Dr. Barbor from London,
a colleague of Dr. Hackett who once brought Prolotherapy from the states to Europe.
After 20 years of experience, working mostly on low back pain patients he expanded
the procedure to all unstable joints after completing extensive follow up training
with Dr. Dorman from California and Dr. Weingart from Germany, who wrote the
only book about this type of therapy in Europe.
A good friend and colleague, orthopedist Dr.Baehnisch from Leipzig, Germany whom
he introduced to Prolotherapy in 1998 went to the states several times where
he received in depth training from Dr. Ravin and Dr.Cantieri. These doctors used
the Cyriax diagnostic and treatment technique as well, so it was not difficult
to follow their advances. Consequently Dr. Baehnisch and Dr. Funck were able
to set up new standards for their own work.
From 2000 to 2006 Dr. Funck has treated 1500 cases with Prolotherapy. He was
successful in 88.3 % of them. In his office Dr. Funck uses a local anesthetic
test injection to secure the diagnosis to avoid possible diagnostic errors. This
is a special problem with the shoulder because there are many cases with mixed
signs that are so irritating, even to experts.
In January 2007, Dr. Funck officially retired from his office practice. Once
a week he continues to work in his former practice, treating patients with Prolotherapy.
He continues to study, research, and advocate Prolotherapy around the world.
He is member of the EAPro (European Academy of Prolotherapy).
